Proving itself yet again to be the 'Village That Never Sleeps', straight back after all the festivities and exertions of Christmas and New Year, Monday the 5th of January, Horncliffe residents descended on Maggie & Jeff's home to celebrate the semi-autobiographical novel by Jeanette Winterson.
It is a scary tale about an adoptive child being brought up in the depths of a strict, God fearing Pentecostal Christian cult. The main character realises that she was a lesbian by her teenage years and sets about trying to combine her sexuality with the demands of 24/7 bible classes.
Set in Lancashire in the 1960s the book is an intense story about being forced to face up to your demons and succeeding and failing in dizzying turns.
"We were so pleased to have a great turnout of fabulous veg-shedders and many bedecked in orange" Maggie reports. "We had three soups to start with, several orangey salads, lasagnes, curries and good things."
I am very sad to admit that I was not there for this beautiful feast and hardly dare think what she means by an "Orange and Chocolate and Eileen-special Veg Ice Cream"... perhaps someone could explain to me next time they see me in the Fishers Arms? But apparently "the cakes and scone pudds were awesome, wine flowed and there were plenty smiley faces."
Clearly a great evening, I know there was a Parish Council meeting the next night, for anyone wanting to relive some of the more intense moments of the novel and of course our amazing Salmon Procession the following weekend to really spark the imagination.
Stayed tuned for next month - The Colour Purple - do ask at the Fishers Arms for more details if you are interested in joining us!
