Started work on a new raised bed today. The bed will have cardboard in the bottom with compost on top and planted up with rainbow swiss chard.

New Year's Eve 2023/24 - Scotland!

What on earth do you do in Horncliffe on New Years Eve? Head to the pub of course! Especially if you want great company, delicious food, plenty to drink, music and a wonderful atmosphere. Anyone NOT wanting any of those things can stay at home, put their feet up and enjoy the starlit skies we are so blessed with around here in peace! This year after much debate Veg shed decided to share their January feast on New Years Eve - they nearly did this on New Years Day, but realised that hangovers and general festive overload might be a problem, so we pulled out all the stops and laid on a fabulous Scottish themed buffet for Hogmanay in the newly opened Fisher's Arms. As we were serving up in the pub, visitors could also help themselves for a very reasonable £15 per head, so we were all asked to make double portions and very usefully, any leftovers were helpfully frozen for the annual Salmon procession and dinner the following weekend. Sri Lanka December 2023

A truly magical evening at Livvy's home, down by the bridge. There is definitely a sense of excitement when we venture out of the village and I think in early December we were all starting to feel a little bit festive. Livvy chose Sri Lanka because of family connections, as she has a Sri Lankan son-in-law and we all loved the tingly, citrus flavours we discovered creating our various concoctions... And, of course sampling everyone else's! The food was truly amazing... There are two welcoming dining areas in Livvy's home... The kitchen corner... And the dining room... We all swapped around and chatted to everyone... I actually find helping yourself to more is a great way of discovering more people to chat to! No one wanted to go home... But all good things have to come to an end... Cannae wait tae see y'all for Hogmanay! It's Scottish night in the pub!

A year has passed...

After an eventful year the Horncliffe Veg Shed Blog is back. Nicola & Peter Coulter have escaped to Berwick leaving Horncliffe residents bereft and slightly lost - how will we manage? Who will write the veg shed shed blog posts? After a year of nodding and pretending to know what I was doing, I have at last managed to access the required passwords and take over. That's me, above, on the left, Alison Gibb, boldly helping myself to a large portion of veg. We celebrated May Day 2023 here in Horncliffe in spectacular fashion in ‘The Church’, the Silvester family home, with a veg shed supper in honour of beans and pulses. Dishes included dahl, lentil fritters, various bean stews, and salads, followed, of course, by everyone’s favourite bean – chocolate. A chocolate bread and butter pudding, accompanied by a brownie with cream ensured there were no complaints, in fact I think we all left even healthier than we arrived.
